Biddy Mason and Hannah Duston have been in my head for thirty years; both of them victims up against insurmountable odds. Biddy, formally 'Bridget' was born into slavery and knew nothing else until the man who 'owned' and raped her found himself in California where slavery had been outlawed. Hannah, along with several others, were captured by indigenous Abnaki raiders. Already weak from childbirth she was marched through the cold wilderness toward Canada. She witnessed the brutality of the Abnaki. In order to escape, Hannah then killed ten of her captors, four of whom were youths. She returned home with two other captives and with the scalps of the natives. If you're Hispanic and from the West Coast you've probably heard of the 'Llorona' (Weeping woman) who haunts the streets at night searching for children to kill. I've always wondered what her side of the story was. These three women give their own accounts of their harrowing experience.
